You get to see ME today!

13724089_10155289197149852_6721589974065864947_o_FotorI get Tiny Buddha in my email Inbox each day. It’s one of the few daily emails I get that I always take time to read because they are usually spot on and helpful to me. Today’s email was no exception – it was titled “5 Ways to Find Peace: Life Lessons from an 8th Grade Teacher.” This is how it started:

Good Morning, and welcome to 8th grade History with Mr. Bacchus. The first thing I need everyone to do is to take out your class schedule and make sure that it says Mr. Bacchus for this period. Is there anyone who doesn’t have my name on their schedule?

No? We sure? Great!!

Now I need each one of you to take a moment and thank whoever you believe in, the powers that be, or even the magic genie that granted you this wish, because you’re one of the few lucky enough to be in my history class this year.

Why lucky?

Because there is going to be a day when you don’t feel like getting out of the bed, but you will remember that you have Mr. Bacchus today and you will be up before the alarm goes off.

One day, your boyfriend or girlfriend will break up with you in the middle of the hallway, and the news will quickly spread via social networking. But when your friend asks you if you’re okay, you’ll simply smile and say,

“I have Mr. Bacchus today.”

I was immediately drawn in and happier. As I read the rest of the article I realized I want to be that person for other people, and I want to find that person (or reason) for me each day. So, I’m going to try very hard to give my co-workers a reason to come in with a smile everyday: “I get to see Sherri today.” Or make sure my husband knows how much I love him and that I’m his number one fan before he leaves and when he gets back home: “I get to see Sherri today.” And the same for my friends…..I want you to feel lucky to know me, but more importantly, I want to deserve that feeling. And I already know I’m lucky to know you…I get to see YOU today!

I love to cause scenes

Today’s #bloglikecrazy writing prompt is a fun one – favorite TED Talk. I learned about TED Talks when I moved back to Alabama a few years ago. I was fascinated and intrigued by this “Ted” that everyone kept referring to; I had to meet him. Ha! TED Talks, if you aren’t aware, are basically smallish type talks that presenters give at TED conferences and salons around the world sharing their ideas, knowledge, or just anything interesting. The idea behind TED is “ideas worth spreading” and TED stands for Technology, Entertainment, and Design. They’ve taken the world by storm and people are addicted to these things now…my husband included. They are usually highly entertaining and informative.

My favorite TED Talk was shared with me by said hubby. He loves watching TED Talks and knew I would enjoy this one. It’s from Charlie Todd, the creator of Improv Everywhere, a prank-based troupe out of New York City that likes to “cause a scene in a public place resulting in a positive experience” wherever and whenever. I love that they bring smiles to people in most anything they do. They remind me a lot of Soul Pancake.

This is a great talk in that he shows his first prank, the reactions, and then goes on to show bigger, more awesome pranks – always with the intent to make people smile and share the story. My favorite is the subway segment because it was easy and made a lot of people smile.

I have often wanted to do a “Free Hugs” campaign. I first saw one on the National Mall in D.C. and immediately jumped on board. I would love love love to live my life doing things like Free Hugs campaigns, high fiving everyone at Starbucks in the mornings, or the ultimate….”Take a Seat – Make a Friend?” maybe in 5 Points South or in the middle of the UAB district which is bustling at lunch time (I’ve seriously scoped these locations out specifically for this purpose).

What would you do to bring smiles to folks?

Enjoy the video below and until tomorrow dear friends…………

Did You Miss Me?

I PROMISE I am still here. For those that know me in real life, I am still very here, very busy, and very happy.

The weight loss is going ok. I fell off the exercise wagon a bit, but have gotten back on and am very happy. I went to spinning twice, walked a 5k, and dance walked my booty off last week. I’ve also joined Weight Watchers online to help keep track of calories, points, and activity.

I’m also now a columnist for the new Women’s Voices Magazine launching next week! I will be writing about social media and online stuff, all with a little humor and hopefully a cocktail. 😉

I’ve recently started the Birmingham Girls Club and we kick off on Wednesday! It’s a new club in Birmingham to help the amazing women in our city grow their minds, bodies, & souls – all while giving back to the community.

I also kicked off a little campaign called Buy Boston A Round to thank the first responders and folks of Boston during that harrowing ordeal. Let’s show them we care!

And we just had our latest Birmingham Dance Walk…soon to be renamed Dance Walk Party. I’m hoping to get more companies involved in the Dance Walk Parties and bring them to organizations and groups that need some team building fun! And take it everywhere, not just Birmingham, hence the new name. 🙂

There’s one more venture in the works, but that’s top-secret for now.

More soon, but I’m still here.

Hugs!

Thankful

Today’s post is a little late, but it’s been a big day. I will write more about it tomorrow, but I do want to say thank you to all those who responded today on Facebook and the blog with positive thoughts and well wishes regarding the bike campaign. I spent the morning talking to you all about that and then headed to Food Blog South for the afternoon. I did my taxes after I got home and then enjoyed steak, Brussels sprouts, and catching up on shows with the man. All in all, a wonderful end to what started out as a kind of dreadful day. But, I still woke up, I still have air, food, water, clothing, housing, and my health. I still have love for God, my friends, and my family in my heart. And so I had the most amazing day – period. Good night, dear friends, and thank you for stopping by.

FINALLY! I can tell the world!  Do you know how hard it has been for me to keep quiet about this? I am not known for my patience or keeping my mouth shut when there is big news. I can do it (obviously), but I’m not a fan. 🙂 The “big news” that I hinted at earlier this week is finally public knowledge – Daniel and I are engaged! He asked me last week, I – of course – said yes, and we’ve been quietly telling the family and such until today. There was a method to our madness and I appreciate all of my wonderful gal pals and close friends not getting offended by not being the first to know. It was a very special, sweet proposal without a lot of fanfare (unlike me and what I normally go for, but it was PERFECT in this situation), and we are happy to finally be able to tell everyone. We have so many wonderful friends that have been along for the ride ever since we met that night at Little Savannah so many moons ago. We have made a million more friends on our journey and can’t wait to share the special day with all of you. We haven’t ironed out any details yet, but do keep an eye out for information. I think we’re going to have to do a Kickstarter campaign to raise funds for the celebration party we want to throw at the end of it all. Or I’m going to go around asking for donations again, but not for the next Bham Dance Walk…for our party! lol. You all are most definitely invited, but it may turn into BYOB because there is no way we can feed and imbibe all the awesome folks of Birmingham that we want to invite. We’ll figure it out, but any and all tips, help, advice is greatly appreciated. And yes, that is my ring. He did a GREAT job! 🙂

In other news: Don’t forget that the Picture Perfect Holiday Giveaway is still open and I’m looking forward to your entry.
